Ian Teare studied Naval Architecture to Degree level and spent time training as a Navigator with the Royal Air Force before embarking on his career in the marine legal sphere. He started working for one of the major London Admiralty Law Firms in early 1992. In addition to stints in London, his career has involved spending 5 years in Athens and 9 years in Singapore. He has been a Partner with Hill Dickinson since the start of 2021 and heads up the Firm’s UK contentious shipping team. Ian’s practice covers a wide range of cases but has a particular focus on marine casualties, especially collisions and salvage.
Ian’s career highlights include cases such as the grounding of the containership Rena in New Zealand in 2011. He also acted for Owners in relation to the collision and actual total loss of the bulk carrier B.Oceania in the Malacca Straits, also in 2011. That case led directly to the reported case from the Australian Federal Court, Atlasnavios Navegacao Ltd v The Ship XIN TAI HAI (No 2) [2012] FCA 1497. More recently, Ian acted for the successful Owners and Insurers of the VLOC, FMG Sydney, in the reported English High Court case FMG Sydney v The Owners of MSC Apollo [2023] EWHC 328 (Admlty) which the other vessel was found 100% to blame for a collision in a crossing situation
Ian is ranked in Legal 500 Europe as a “Leading Individual” which reflects the fact that much of his casualty work originates in the Greek market.
