Anthony is a partner in the London office of DAC Beachcroft and head of the firm’s marine and energy service line, as well as the London office lead for the firm’s Latin American practice. He has specialised in marine insurance for over 30 years, both at the direct and reinsurance level (facultative and treaty), and with particular emphasis on losses in Latin America and the Caribbean.  He practised for a time in the Cayman Islands and is a Spanish speaker.

Anthony has acted in some of the highest profile insurance and reinsurance disputes over the years, both through litigation and arbitration, as far back as the grounding of the BRAER in 1993, to the RIO ASSU [1999] 1 Lloyd’s Rep 115 (concerning P&I Club Letters of Undertaking), and acting for NVOCC’s following the loss of the MOL COMFORT in 2013.  Other notable cases include the grounding of the MSC NAPOLI in 2007, Limit v Axa [2007] EWHC 2321 (energy construction reinsurance), BAIC v Matelec [2013] EWHC 3278 (Comm) (project cargo) and Enemalta v. The Standard Club (Asia) Ltd [2021] EWHC 1215 (Comm) (concerning court powers under the Convention on Limitation of Liability for Maritime Claims).  He is currently involved in matters arising from the sinking of the X-PRESS PEARL, and is acting in a number of marine war claims arising from the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.

Anthony is a regular speaker at international insurance and reinsurance conferences, particularly in the marine, energy and construction markets.  He is a co-author of the reinsurance volume to Appleman on Insurance Law, one of the leading insurance law texts for US practitioners, and is a joint contributor to the shipping law chapter of the International Comparative Legal Guide 2023, together with his colleague Joanne Waters.  He is a recommended practitioner in the UK directories, having been noted for work of a “particularly high standard” (Legal 500) and described by clients as “loyal, controlled and considered”, with a “superb commercial acumen” and “an extremely capable lawyer with great leadership skills” (Chambers).  He is also a highly ranked lawyer in the Chambers Latin America directory and a past holder of the insurance and reinsurance Client Choice Award conferred by the International Law Office.
