This will include discussion as to why owners might require insurance cover significantly in excess of the vessel’s value, when and why will underwriters agree to it and what legal issues can be thrown up by over-valuation.

Keynote Address: Container Shipping

The mad scramble for economies of scale by container shipping lines during a low-trade growth period that followed the global financial crisis of 2008/2009 led to massive overcapacity and heavy industry losses for much of the past decade. Hanjin Shipping collapsed under a ton of debt and a wave of consolidation swept over container shipping, cutting the number of global carriers from 20 to fewer than 10 in just a few years. Now, container shipping is facing another demand-crushing global crisis – Covid-19. But this time it is different. Even with a volume decline of more than 20 percent on the major east-west trades, carriers may in fact be having what one analyst called “a good pandemic.” Greg Knowler, Europe Editor for the Journal of Commerce, will show how carriers have not only prevented a rate slide in the face of weak volume, but have kept rates at unexpectedly high levels on the Asia-Europe, trans-Pacific and trans-Atlantic trades.

Presenter: Greg Knowler, Senior Journalist Maritime and Trade, IHS Markit
